As the result of the rapid growth of LIGHT POLLUTION – Artificial Lights at Night “ALAN”, our City leaders and Malibu residents collectively created and passed the 2018 City of Malibu’s DARK SKY ORDINANCE. Malibu is one of the first coastal cities in California to pass such an impactful and comprehensive ordinance for the commercial and residential management of night time light pollution in our fragile regions.
The Malibu DARK SKY ORDINANCE will apply to all neighborhoods and residences in the City of Malibu. To avoid surprising any uneducated or uninformed residents about the residential DARK SKY ORDINANCE’s, which began in October 2022, we ask your help educating everyone about Malibu’s ordinance and how it effects every living thing in Malibu.

This science guide provides a condensed introduction to night light science, and an outline of the City of Malibu’s ordinance: KELVINS, LUMES, and SHELDED LIGHT FIXTURES. The guide discusses the benefits of the Dark Sky: reducing energy, conserving natural resources, the negative impacts on wildlife and habitats, the history of bulbs, lighting technology, and the importance of night lighting to all MALIBU neighborhoods.

Our youthful population may help to guide the Malibu community towards feelings of pride as we all rediscover or discover our unique and fragile Malibu Dark Sky!
